…Meets Protest Planners Today
From all indications, the United Nations that invested so much in restoring and maintaining peace in Liberia is not taking the June 7 save the state protest lightly.
As a result, the world body has dispatched one of its top officials to Liberia to meet with organizers of the much-talked about protest.
Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Assistant Secretary of the United Nations and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel is to be in the country to hold major meeting with organizers of the June 7 protest.
Already, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for in Liberia and Assistant Secretary General Yacoub El Hillo has written organizers of the protest under the banner “Council of Patriots” informing them about today’s meeting which is expected to be held at the UN One House in Sinkor, Monrovia.
Mr. Hillo in the communication to COP said the meeting will focus on national issues especially as it relates to the planned protest.
One of the organizers of the protest Henry P. Costa confirmed that they have received communication from the United Nations about the meeting.
He said organizers of the planned protest will attend the meeting with the top UN official.
The meeting is also expected to be attended by ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, African Union Representative to Liberia and the UN Resident Coordinator.
It can be recalled that on May 14, 2019, President Dr. George Manneh Weah in the presence of ECOWAS, AU and UN representatives, met with organizers of the planned June 7 protest at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.
The meeting was intended for the president to hear from the organizers of the protest as it relates to their concerns for which they want to protest.
But unfortunately, the spokesperson of COP, Abraham Darius Dillon, said they only want to get guarantee from the president and his government that their right to protest will be protected beginning June 7, 2019.
